Fifteen European countries have called on the Tanzanian government to release the bodies of people who were killed during the October general elections to their families and also free all political prisoners. In a joint statement, the EU Delegation, the British High Commission, the Canadian High Commission, and several European embassies said they had credible reports of extrajudicial killings, disappearances, arbitrary arrests, and hidden bodies. Members of the European Parliament have called for sanctions against Tanzania, condemning the arrest of opposition leader Tundu Lissu amid reports of kidnappings and killings. President Samia Suluhu Hassan was announced as the election winner with over 98% of the vote.
