France has decided to withdraw some of its diplomatic staff in Mali due to the deteriorating security situation there, which has been hit by a jihadist fuel blockade. Paris however did not say how many staff will leave. Mali’s military rulers, like those in Burkina Faso and Niger, came to power through coups and have distanced themselves from their former colonial ruler France, turning instead to Russia for security support. France had recently urged its citizens to leave Mali “as soon as possible” as the fuel blockade disrupted many aspects daily life in Bamako and other areas. French officials and analysts say Russia’s involvement in the region has not improved security or stopped the advance of jihadist groups.
