Uganda has announced that it will no longer grant refugee status to people from countries that are not currently at war, including Ethiopia, Somalia, and Eritrea. That’s according to reporting from The Daily Monitor. The decision comes amid dwindling donor support, with a refugee population now nearing two million. This reportedly has strained resources and services in the African nation. The country’s Minister for Relief, Disaster Preparedness and Refugees, Hilary Onek, added that Uganda used to receive $240 million annually from UNHCR but now gets less than $100 million from donors, and this year, only $18 million was received. Officials say Uganda’s open-door policy remains, stressing however that new arrivals from these countries will not be registered as refugees. Existing refugees meanwhile will keep their status.
