West African leaders are calling for united action to protect democracy and the rule of law in the region. Speaking in Nigeria at an event marking the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Parliament’s 25th anniversary, they warned that the region cannot withstand the growing threats it faces. Sierra Leone’s President, Julius Bio, who chairs the ECOWAS, highlighted recent threats to democracy—including military coups in Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, and Guinea, as well as the attempted coup and ongoing instability in Guinea-Bissau—as urgent signs that action is needed. Bio urged ECOWAS member states to take strong, coordinated steps to confront the challenges facing democracy in West Africa.#DWAfrica
