Burkina Faso’s Council of Ministers has approved a bill to bring back the death penalty for crimes like treason, terrorism, and espionage. Justice Minister Edasso Rodrigue Bayala said the move is part of broader justice reforms. The death penalty was abolished in 2018. The bill still needs approval from parliament and the courts. Since the 2022 coup, the military government has delayed elections, dissolved the electoral commission, and tightened control over the media—suspending some international media houses and arresting several journalists. The country is one of several in West Africa where recent military takeovers have been driven by public frustration over insecurity under past elected governments.#DWAfrica
